I K Chavda won the seat for the first time for the Congress in 1980, and after two terms as MP was defeated by in 1989 by the BJP's Nathubhai M Patel. The HQ of the milk revolution made restitution to Chavda in 1991, and re-elected him in 1996, although reducing his vote tally from 52.5 % to 50.66 %.
