Suraj Bhan was first elected from here in 1967 as a Bharatiya Jan Sangh candidate, but lost the next round to the Congress candidate. In 1977, he contested on the BLD ticket and won, and retained the seat in 1980 as the Janata Party candidate. In 1984, when he fought on a BJP ticket, he was consistently shown the door till 1991 by the Congress's Ram Prakash. However, he justified the BJP's faith in him by winning the seat in 1996, even though his tally was only 31.77 %.
