Srikantadatta Wodeyar of the erstwhile royal family first won the seat for the Congress in 1984 and retained it in 1989. Crossing over to the BJP before the 1991 election, he was trounced by Chandraprabha Urs, daughter of the late Karnataka strongman Devaraj Urs. Realising his mistake, he returned to the Congress ranks, was renominated in 1996 election which he won quite easily. The BJP managed 21.93 % of the vote. The former maharaja has opted out of the race this time, citing his medical condition.
