In 1967 E K Nayanar, later to become chief minister, won from here on the CPI-M ticket. Soon after it started the state's favourite pastime of alternating between the Congress and the Left. In 1991 V S Vijayaraghavan of the Congress was elected MP, and in 1996 it was the turn of the CPI-M's N N Krishnadas to replace him.
