Till 1984, the Congress had a clear run here barring 1977 when the BLD candidate became the first non-Congress MP from here. In 1989, the BJP's Laxmanrao defeated the Congress's two-time sitting MP V N Patil. In 1991 the BJP's P K Anna Patil lost to him. In 1996, the Congress came second, getting 39.29 % of the vote; the BJP won with 48.38 %.
