Another Congress citadel, this seat was won in 1977 by the Republican Party of India-Khobragade. The Wasniks took the seat back, before losing to the BJP in 1989. In 1991, young Mukul Wasnik won the traditional family -- his father Balkrishna had won it in 1980 and 1984 -- seat back for the Congress, defeating P G Gavai -- lieutenant governor during the anti-Sikh riots of the BJP. The Shiv Sena contested this seat in 1996 with the BJP and defeated Wasnik by almost 70,000 votes.
