Former Union home minister S B Chavan won in 1980 and 1984. But his son Ashok Chavan was roundly defeated by the Janata Dal in 1989, making it the second time that the Congress has lost from this seat. Suryakanta Patil took the seat back for the Congress in 1991, and in 1996 the seat stayed with the Congress. Sharad Joshi, the economist-farmer-turned-politician, who was contesting on a JP ticket, was fourth in the pecking order.
