After losing in 1977 to the BLD, the Congress lost this seat next to the BJP in 1989, its candidate Pundalik Dave coming second to the Congress in the previous two rounds. Ankushrao Tope won back the seat for the Congress in 1991, before being unseated by the BJP's Uttamsingh Pawar in 1996. The margin of defeat: almost 120,000 votes.
