Bapu Kaldate, then of the BLD, was the first to dethrone the Congress from this seat, in 1977. The next time the Congress lost from here was to the Socialists in 1984. In 1989 also this seat eluded the Congress, and went with an Independent candidate, Moreshwar Save who retained the seat in 1991 on a Sena ticket. He defeated Dr Rafiq Zakaria (Congress). In 1996, the seat remained with the Sena, and former MP Moreshwar Save, who was in the fray this time as an Independent, came fourth. The fight was between Pradeep Jaiswal of the Sena and Suresh Patil of the Congress, the latter losing by 115,000 votes.
