The pocket borough of Sharad Pawar, this seat saw V N Gadgil defeated by the BLD's Sambhajirao Kakade in 1977. In 1980 Shankarrao Patil (Congress) won back the seat for his party, and in 1984, when the nation was blown aside by the Rajiv whirlwind, Baramati voted for Sharad Pawar, then in his own Congress faction. Pawar won 60. 6 % of the vote. In 1989, Shankarrao Patil won back the seat; Pawar, back in the Congress, did not contest. In 1991, the seat went to Congressman Ajit Pawar, Sharadrao's nephew. He won 75.3 % of the vote. In 1996, Sharad Pawar won by 160,000 votes, but his share of the vote had fallen to 57.23 %.
