Dajisaheb Chavan won the first election from here, as the PWP candidate. His next three terms as MP were as a Congress nominee. Succeeding him in 1977 -- until 1991 -- was his widow, Premilatai Chavan. In 1984, she won 83.1 % of the vote, the second highest in the country after a certain Rajiv Gandhi who won 83.7%. In 1996, her son Prithvijraj won the seat. Truly a family bastion -- only in 1980 did the Congress nominate a non-Chavan, Y J Mohite.
