After voting Congress in the first three elections, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, precursor to the BJP, won this seat in 1967. In 1971, Vijayaraje Scindia retained the seat for her party. When she tried her luck once again in 1984, this time as the born again BJP candidate, she was sent packing by the Congress candidate. Two years, the Congress fielded journalist Udayan Sharma against the resurgent BJP, but the pen was not more powerful than the politico. The BJP retained this seat in 1996, its nearest rival being the BSP. The Congress won 10 % of the votes.
