A very consistent constituency, it has, barring 1977, always voted for the Congress. Mangru Uikey contested the first election in 1952 against the Congress candidate and lost. The very next round he was elected unopposed, on the Congress ticket. He remained MP till 1971, and was routed by the BLD in 1977. But in 1980 Chhote Uikey won back the seat for the Congress. In 1984 Mohan Lal took over from him, and retained the seat for the Congress till the 1991 election. In 1996, for the first time, the BJP won the seat, Faggansingh Kalsate defeating Mohan Lal by 65,000 votes.
