Only once, in 1952, has the Congress won this seat. First it was the PSP, then the BLD and finally the JD that has been scoring here. Former chief minister Biju Patnaik won this seat in 1977, 1980 and even against the Rajiv wave in 1984. In 1989 and in 1991, Rabi Ray, later Lok Sabha speaker, was elected on the JD ticket. In 1996, the seat remained with the JD, with Srikant Kumar Jena, later parliamentary affairs minister, winning it by 40,000 votes.
