The hotbed of Akali politics, 1996 saw the election of the Akali Dal's Major Uboke Singh, and the defeat of sitting MP S S Kairon -- whose father Pratapsingh was once the state's chief minister -- who was contesting on the Congress ticket, by 44,000 votes. In 1989, the MP was Simranjit Singh Mann, on the SAD-Mann ticket. Mann, of course, did not take his seat in Parliament because he insisted on carrying his sword into the House. Interestingly, the first five elections saw the Congress elected from here, before the constituency switched wholeheartedly to the Akali Dal. The only break was in 1991, with Kairon.
