Prime Minister I K Gujral's constituency, where he faces the Congress candidate even as his party's main opposition, the SAD-BJP combine, have opted out of a contest. Gujral had been elected in 1989, when he made it to the National Front government as foreign minister. Again, till 1977, when another foreign minister, the unflappable Swaran Singh was defeated by the Akali Dal, it has always returned a Congressman to Parliament. Sardar Swaran Singh himself having been elected four consecutive times before being ousted. In 1980 and 1985, Major General Ranjit Singh Sparrow (Congress) represented the constituency.
