Rajesh Pilot, just retired from the IAF, was first elected in 1980, and in 1984 it was K Natwar Singh -- just retired from the IFS -- who defeated the Janata candidate Nathi Singh. In 1989, Vishwendra Singh of the JD defeated Pilot. The BJP won the seat for the first time in 1991, and repeated the act in 1996 despite it changing its candidate to Maharani Divya Singh. Natwar Singh was in the fray as well, on the Congress-Tiwari ticket and he managed to come third winning 76,960 votes.
