Baju Ban Riyan (CPI-M) was elected from here, making it a clean sweep for the Marxists. He defeated Kashiram Reang of the Congress by 54,000 votes. The BJP, which came third, secured 8.32 % or 50,197 votes. Chief Minister Dasaratha Deb was the first MP from here, in 1952, but he lost the next round to the Congress and won back the seat in 1962. It was actually a seesaw for him, for he lost the 1967 election, won in 1971 and lost the 1977 poll.
