The Jan Sangh broke the Congress's early monopoly over this constituency in 1962, and things were never the same again. But after that it was the the BLD and the Janata that made good, and it was 1984 before the BJP could rear its head again when Santosh K Gangwar came second. Since 1989, Gangwar has made it to Parliament on the BJP ticket three times on the trot, defeating the SP's Islam Sabir by 39,000 votes. The BSP's Jahid Khan was a distant third, winning just 54,084 votes.
