Mohan Swarup won this seat for the Praja Socialist Party three consecutive times from 1957, and when he changed to the Congress in the 1971 election the constituency still stood by him. He was railroaded by the BLD in 1977 but the Congress won the seat in 1980 and 1984. In 1989 the other Mrs Gandhi, Maneka, made her electoral debut from here on the JD ticket, and she managed to defeat sitting Congress MP Bhanu Pratap Singh. In 1991, the ex-environment minister lost to the BJP's Parshuram, by a slender margin. She was once again in the fray in 1996 for the JD, and she defeated the sitting BJP MP by 280,000 votes, winning 59.83 % of the vote.
