The BJP's G L Kanaujia managed to break the Congress's dominance over this constituency in 1991, and retained the seat in 1996 as well. Usha Verma, the two-time Congress MP who lost in 1991 to Kanaujia, has trailed him both times. In 1996, she lost by 6,000 votes despite crossing over from the Congress to the SP in the meantime. In the third position was the BSP's Lalji Chauhan, who won 100,431 votes.
