Kedar Nath Singh had won the seat for the Congress once, in 1971, before he got swept away by the 1977 wave. In 1996, which he contested on the Congress-T ticket, he came fourth, two places above the official Congress candidate Raj Karan Singh who was the MP in 1984. In 1991 and 1996, the constituency voted for the BJP. The last time, the BJP defeated the SP's Kamruzama Faugi by 118,000 votes, although it had replaced sitting MP V D Shastri with Devendra Bahadur Rai.
