Journalist Seema Mustafa decided to enter the fray in 1996 as an Independent, and came 10th, winning 0.70 % of the votes. The winner was Brij Bhushan Tiwari of the SP, who defeated his BJP rival and sitting MP Rampal Singh by 26,000 votes. Mohsina Kidwai, who was also in the fray as a Congress-T candidate, came fifth, winning 5.62 % of the vote.
