Shiv Saran Verma first won the seat in 1980, as the JP candidate. He was defeated by former Congress chief minister Sripati Mishra in 1984, who himself was defeated by Verma in 1989. Verma retained the seat for the JD in 1991 as well, but in 1996, when he contested on the Congress ticket he ended up in the fourth position. The BJP's Ram Vilas Veddanti won the seat, defeating the JD's Lal Bahadur Yadav by 43,000 votes.
