The Congress fielded Sunil Shastri, LBS's youngest son, in 1996, but he came fourth, with 7.12 % of the vote. Swami Prasad Singh, who won the seat for the Congress in 1984, lost to Ganga Charan Rajpur of the JD in 1989, the latter himself losing to the BJP's Vishwanath Sharma in 1991. In 1996, the order had gone for a toss. Swami Prasad was in the fray as the BSP candidate this time, and he came third with around 95,000 votes. Rajput, who was in the fray as the BJP man, managed to win the seat, defeating the SP's Raj Narayan by 68,000 votes.
