The city of the Taj Mahal voted Achal Singh of the Congress right through till 1971, switching over to the BLD's S N Chaturvedi in 1977. The seat went back to the Congress in 1980, before journalist Ajay Singh of the Janata Dal broke the trend in 1989. Bhagwan Singh Rawat of the BJP then became the first saffron MP from here in 1991, defeating Ajay Singh. He kept up the performance in 1996 as well, defeating BSP rival A K Maurya by 84,000 votes. Ajay Singh, the ex-MP, came third on the JD ticket, winning 78,929 votes. The Congress's Nihal Singh was in fourth position, winning 7.46 % of the vote.
