After a good run the Congress lost the 1977 election from here to the BLD, but Manvendra Singh won back the seat for the Congress in 1980, defeating Chaudhary Charan Singh's formidable wife, Gayatri Devi . In 1984, Singh was back in the fray, this time as the Janata Dal candidate, and retained the seat defeating Natwar Singh of the Congress. His luck ran out in 1991, when Swami Sakshiji of the BJP won the seat. In 1996, the BJP changed its candidate to Tej Veer Singh, but its luck did not change. The Congress, whose candidate L N Chaudhary had crossed over from the JD, did not do all that badly, coming second, losing by 65,000 votes. The BSP was in third position, winning 102,567 votes, behind the Congress by just 230 votes.
