After 1977 it has been a toss-up between the Congress, which had earlier retained the seat, and the JD, and in 1991, for the first time the BJP's Lal Bahadur Rawal won the seat. The BJP changed its candidate to Kishan Lal Diler in 1996, who managed to hold on to the seat, defeating Ranbir Singh Kashyap of the BSP by 112,000 votes. The SP was in third position, winning 93,214 votes.
