Surendra Singh won the seat for the Congress three times running between 1967 and 1971 before losing to the BLD in 1977. The next time he could enter Parliament on the Congress ticket was in 1984. The JD claimed the seat in 1989, and in 1991 the BJP's Chatterpal won the seat for his party for the first time. He retained it in 1996, defeating the SP's Kiran Pal Singh by 51,000 votes. The BSP's Rajendra Chaudhary came third, winning 88,283 votes. Sarvar Husain, the JD MP in 1989, was in fourth place on the Congress ticket, winning 16,010 votes.
