Following a familiar pattern, the Congress won all the elections till 1971, and in 1977 an Independent, K N Dagupta, won the seat. The CPI won this seat in 1980, and from 1984 it has been the turn of the CPI-M. In 1996 Jitendra Nath Das, the sitting CPI-M MP, retained the seat for his party, defeating the Congress's Deb Prasad Roy by 112,000 votes.
