BJP-Trinamul to tie up for panchayat elections in Bengal

Bharatiya Janata Party's West Bengal unit president Tapan Sikdar on Tuesday said his party would have seat adjustments with the Trinamul Congress for the ensuing three-tier panchayat elections in the state slated to be held in the end of May.

He told the media in Calcutta that details would be finalised through discussions. They had earlier agreed in principle to continue their relationship with the Trinamul Congress in the state. He described TC leader Mamta Banerjee's support for the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government at the Centre as 'very nice'.

He said Banerjee's special package for the state's development was 'welcome'.

The state BJP president said they might not agree with the Trinamul Congress on every small issue but their present 'friendly relationship' would continue.

He said both his party as well as the Trinamul Congress wanted an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the wakf scam in the state, and was confident that their demand would be accepted by the Union government.

Answering a question, he said the Trinamul Congress-BJP would jointly contest all the seats in the three-tier panchayati raj institutions numbering about 72,000. He said details on the seat adjustment would be worked out at the appropriate time.
