President urged not to visit Vasco da Gama memorial in PortugalSandesh Prabhudesai in PanajiPresident K R Narayanan has been urged not to visit the Vasco da Gama memorial during his four-day visit to Portugal, which is presently celebrating the centenary of his discovery of India. The Deshpremi Nagrik Samiti, which is spearheading the anti-Portuguese agitation in Goa, has expressed fear that the President may be persuaded by the Portuguese authorities to visit the memorial and pay tributes to "their hero". Since Narayanan is leaving for Germany, Portugal, Luxembourg and Turkey on September 6, Samiti president Vishwanath Lawande has faxed a letter to the President, requesting him not to fall prey to such moves by the Portuguese authorities. The Goan Samiti had also taken initiative in stalling similar centenary celebrations in India.
