Hindu wins damages after US restaurant serves up beefAn American fast-food chain has agreed to pay an undisclosed sum in an-out-of-court settlement to a Hindu it served with beef rather than the beans he ordered. Taco Bell made the settlement after Mukesh K Rai, 33, of the Los Angeles suburb of Carpinteria sued, claiming the inadvertant bite he took into the beef-filled burrito pastry violated his religious principles, the Los Angeles Times said yesterday. In his claim for damages, he charged that the ''trauma'' caused him to seek advice from his spiritual guru in Britain and eventually to journey to India to purify himself by bathing in the holy waters of the Ganges river. Incensed by Taco Bell's refusal to give him a refund or apologise, Rai filed a lawsuit seeking $ 144,000 in damages for the April 1997 incident, the paper said. UNI
