Badal's men move to oust Tohra from SGPCThe battle for supremacy in Akali politics has finally reached Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee supremo Gurcharan Singh Tohra's doorstep. Expressing lack of confidence in Tohra, SGPC members owing allegiance to Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Parkash Singh Badal have issued a show-cause notice asking Tohra to convene a meeting of the committee's general house within 15 days. Copies of the notice sent to the SGPC president yesterday were released to journalists by SGPC general secretary Balbir Singh Pannu at a press conference in Amritsar today. A copy of the notice, which has been signed by 103 members, including the 10 pro-Badal executive committee members who suspended Akal Takht jathedar Ranjit Singh, was also delivered at Tohra's office at the Teja Singh Samundri Hall inside the Golden Temple complex today. The notice charges Tohra with creating obstacles and trying to jeopardise the Khalsa tercentenary celebrations. It says Tohra has brought the celebrations "under a shadow of controversy". UNI
