E-Mail this report to a friend

Nagpur Divisional Commissioner J S Saharia has taken over as the officiating vice-chancellor of the Nagpur University, following the resignations of Vice-Chancellor Dr B B Chopane and Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Yoganand Kale.

The two had resigned owning "moral responsibility" for the bogus degree and marksheet scandal. Maharashtra Governor and University Chancellor P C Alexander had accepted their decision Monday.

Meanwhile, the biggest-ever scandal in the university's 75-year-old history claimed its first victim. The body of 55-year-old Jairam Vithoba Shende, assistant registrar (examinations), was found floating in the Ambazari Lake in west Nagpur Monday afternoon.

The police were investigating his role in the scandal. Fourteen persons, including the Officiating Registrar and Controller of Examination Prakash Mistry, Engineering Faculty Dean Hemant Thakre, Assistant Registrar and the leader of the racket Yadav Kohachade and some teachers, have been arrested.

The police are looking into whether Shende's death was suicide or murder.
