J&K police arrest 10 militants at Leh

Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have arrested ten local militants at Turtuk in Leh district while two security personnel and a civilian were killed in heavy shelling by Pakistani troops from across the border in Drass sector.

A police handout late last night claimed that ten militants were arrested by police at Turtuk in Leh district recently. The release said all of them were part of a group trained and equipped by Pakistan to spread militancy in Leh area which was peaceful for all these nine years of militancy in the Kashmir valley.

Police said a large cache of arms and ammunition, including assault rifles, magazines, explosives and incriminating documents, were recovered from the arrested militants.

It said efforts were on to trace the other members of the group.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor G C Sexana and Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah who visited Kargil and other areas were shown the recoveries made by the police from the arrested militants, the handout claimed.

Dr Farooq Abdullah announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for the police party responsible for arresting the militants and foiling Pak designs to spread militancy in the far-flung areas of Ladakh. Sources said some houses were also damaged due to shelling.

Meanwhile, bodies of six soldiers were brought in Srinagar by helicopter from Kargil yesterday. Their identity was not known immediately.
