Pak shelling destroys arms dump in Kargil

E-Mail this report to a friend

An arms dump in the army cantonment area in the Kargil sector was destroyed yesterday due to unprovoked mortar and artillery shelling by the Pakistani troops. Residents of Kargil town fled to safer places fearing that residential areas too might be targeted.

A defence ministry spokesman said that Pakistani troops resorted to mortar and artillery shelling from across the border on Indian positions in the sector. He revealed that about eight to 10 shells fell near the cantonment area, causing damage to an arms dump. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

He said the exact number of shells fired by the Pakistani troops was not known. Some explosions were heard from other forward areas too.

Indian troops retaliated and targeted forward Pakistani positions. Casualties suffered by the Pakistani troops were not immediately known. The shelling had since stopped, he said.
