After admitting fresh infiltration in two sectors in Leh district, defence sources here said heavy shelling was continuing in the Charbatla and Turtuk areas for the past two days.

GOC, Northern Command Lieutenant General H M Khanna revealed yesterday that there has been infiltration in Charbatla and Turtuk sectors in Leh district of Ladakh. Sources said Pakistan troops have shelled various areas in these sectors for the past two days.

Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Naveen Chowdhary told Rediff On The NeT that the district administration was "ready for any eventuality." He said he had visited five villages in Charbatla and Turtuk to take stock of the situation. "The shelling has continued for two days and I have told the people that if they wanted to shift, the district administration is ready to provide them alternate, safe accommodation."

"The villagers told me they would not like to shift from their villages and would rather wait," Chowdhary added.

He said shells were hitting the mountains around the villages; "so far there has been no report of any injury," he added.

Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Khurshid Ahmad Ganaei has rushed to Kargil to review the situation and take stock of the supplies there. He visited Leh on Saturday and reviewed the situation at Turtuk and adjoining villages with the district administration.
