SC spares Medha, Arundhati of contempt trial

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Supreme Court today spared Narmada Bachao Andolan leaders Medha Patkar and Dharmadhikari and Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy from the rigours of contempt proceedings for their attempt to scandalise the court for its interim order on raising the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam, by deciding not to proceed any further against them in the matter.

''We are not inclined to initiate any contempt proceedings against the NBA, its leaders or Ms Arundhati Roy. We are of the opinion, in the larger interest of the issues pending before us, that we need not pursue the matter any further,'' observed a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice S P Bharucha and Justice B N Kirpal.

The judges said that the NBA and its leaders would hereafter desist from acting in a manner which had the tendency to interfere with the due administration of justice or which violated the injunction issued by the court from time to time.
