Taxi strike in Mumbai called off

The two-day-old taxi strike in Mumbai was called off today after successful intervention of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and his cabinet colleague Hussain Dalvai.

A delegation of the Mumbai Taximen's Union led by Sharad Rao and its general secretary A L Quadros met the chief minister at the government guest house 'Sahyadri' at 1100 hrs and decided to call off the strike at 1200 hrs.

After detailed discussions with the delegation, the chief minister ordered the transport department to suspend, with immediate effect, the process of issuing re-inspection notices to taxi owners owning old taxis (15 years or more).

A statement issued by the MTU said Deshmukh also accepted the union's request to treat more than 2000 notices already issued as 'cancelled'. In return the union offered to co-operate with the administration for any meaningful move to reduce the automobile pollution in the city and conduct a joint study to identify all types of polluting vehicles after the Diwali festival.

About 50,000 taxies were off the roads since the last two days which caused inconvenience to commuters in the metropolis.
