Calcutta HC strikes down Maharashtra Govt's order on Bangladeshi nationals
The Calcutta High Court today dismissed an order of the Maharashtra Government asking Bangladeshi nationals to leave for their country.
Justice Samaresh Banerjee dismissed the order on a petition filed by the
West Bengal Government.
A few months ago, Maharashtra Government asked nearly 22
Bangladeshi nationals to leave Mumbai. They were brought to Calcutta
under tight security by a train to be deported through the
Indo-Bangla border in West Bengal.
The situation , however, took an ugly turn when a group led by Forward
Bloc legislator Robin Mukherjee stormed into the compartment in
which the Bangladeshis were travelling at Uluberia station on the
Howrah-Kharagpur section and 'freed' the Bangladeshis from the
custody of the Maharashtra police.
Challenging its Maharashtra counterpart's order, the West Bengal
government moved the high court which stayed the deportation and
asked the Bangladeshis to report to police stations, close to where
they were staying.
