BJP executive meet will back 'mahajot' in Bengal

The two-day national executive of the Bharatiya Janata Party, meeting in New Delhi on Saturday, will formally support the efforts of Trinamul Congress leader Mamta Banerjee for 'mahajot' to oust the Marxist government in West Bengal in the next assembly elections.

This is in consonance with the party's policy of ''no political untouchability,'' party vice president J P Mathur told newspersons today.

Besides, the executive would take stock of the BJP's performance over the past 20 years and review political developments since the Chennai convention, including the Bihar elections, US president Bill Clinton's visit, Indo-Pak relations, NAM and the economic situation, including budget proposals and price situation.

Mathur said a political resolution, the draft of which is being prepared by vice president K Jana Krishnamurthy, would be adopted at the meeting.

He said the executive is likely to express its satisfaction at the progress being made by the party, including the erstwhile Jana Sangh.

Asserting that the party did not believe in political untouchability and hence would support the effort to form a 'mahajot' in West Bengal to root out the CPM government, the BJP leader however evaded a query on whether the party would not mind having an understanding with the Congress at the Centre. ''It is a far-fetched question,'' is all he would say.

While discussing the economic scenario, the executive would review the budget proposals and give suggestions as to what the government can do further.

He executive, while chalking out the party's programmes would also deliberate on the possible venue and dates of the party's council meeting which would also elect the next president.
