Delhi HC admits PIL by cricket fans

The division bench of the Delhi high court today directed the Government of India, Board of Control for Cricket in India and Delhi and District Cricket Association to file their replies to a public interest litigation petition before May 16.

The PIL, filed by two Delhi-based cricket fans Rahul Mehra and Shantanu Sharma, has asked the court to give directions for a through and impartial probe into the financial dealings of the BCCI and the DDCA. They have also asked the court to direct the government to derecognise these two bodies and withdraw of governmental benefits extended to them for promotion of cricket in India and Delhi respectively.

The matter came up for hearing before Justice Davinder Gupta and Justice Cyriac Joesph this morning.

Advocate for the petitioners Prashant Bhushan told rediff.com that the ongoing match-fixing scandals have nothing to do with the case. "These two cricket lovers were so disgusted with the performance of the Indian cricket team on the recent tour of Australia that they decided to file a PIL against the two cricket bodies with an intention to clean up the rot that has set in in cricket and its administration.

"We are also asking for abolishing the proxy system that is helping non-cricketing people getting into the management of such bodies," Bhushan said.
