Pakistan denies hand in massacres

Pakistan dismissed as 'allegations' India's claim that it engineered massacres in Kashmir in which about 100 civilians were killed.

Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had accused Pakistan of being involved in these attacks and had also said that Islamabad wanted to derail the peace process.

A foreign office spokesman in Islamabad said such statements were intended to malign Pakistan.

''India must reduce its forces in Kashmir for progress towards a just settlement of this long-standing issue,'' the spokesman said.

On the Hizbul's cease-fire offer, the spokesman said Pakistan had stated that this was part of the dynamics of the Kashmir problem.

Reaffirming Pakistan's position on the Kashmir killings, the spokesman said his country had already condemned the killings.
