Left Front suffers another jolt in West Bengal civic pollsThe ruling Left Front on Tuesday suffered a setback when it lost the Uttarpara-Kotrung municipality to the Trinamul Congress. In the 24-member civic body, where elections were held on Tuesday, the Trinamul Congress bagged 17 wards while the Left Front captured five, state Election Commission sources said. The Congress won the remaining two wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which did not enter into a tie-up with the Trinamul this time, failed to get any seat. The front's defeat comes close on the heels of its debacle in the prestigious Calcutta Municipal Corporation in the June 25 election where the Trinamul-BJP combine had captured the board. Describing it as the "people's victory", Trinamul chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandopadhyay, told reporters in Calcutta that the people had revolted against the "misrule" of the Left Front. "Despite resorting to violence the CPI-M-led front failed to retain the board in the civic body," he said. PTI |
