J&K landmine blast toll rises to three: PTI

E-Mail this report to a friend

With another soldier succumbing to injuries late on Monday night, the death toll in the powerful landmine explosion earlier in the day in the frontier district of Kupwara has risen to three, a defence spokesman said in Srinagar.

Brigadier B S Sher Gill and Colonel R S Chauhan were killed on the spot and three soldiers were injured when their vehicle ran over a landmine planted by militants on the Zechaldar-Handwara road in Kupwara, 100 km from Srinagar.

The impact of the explosion, triggered by militants by remote control, was very powerful.

Soon after the incident, troops cordoned off two dozen villages and started house-to-house searches.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack that was the second major incident in Kashmir valley after the withdrawal of a cease-fire by the Hizbul Mujahideen on August 8.
