Floods claim 17 in Andhra Pradesh

Seventeen persons have been killed due to heavy rain and floods in Andhra Pradesh over the last few days.

Nandyal town has been cut off due to flooding in the Kundru river and people in low lying areas have been shifted to relief camps, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said in the legislative assembly on Wednesday.

He said detailed reports on loss of life and damage to properties and crops were being obtained from districts.

Naidu said Guntur accounted for seven deaths due to flooding of the Vogeru rivulet in Chilakaluripeta and Rentachintala. Three persons were killed in a wall collapse in Boddikurapadu village in Prakasam district.

Three persons were killed due to flooding in Nalgonda district. A death occurred in Kurnool. Besides, three persons were washed away in a lorry accident due to flooding on the highway between Kurnool and Nandyal towns, he pointed out.

The chief minister said traffic on the highway between Guntur and Ongole was diverted due to flooding. The water level in the Budameru rivulet in Krishna district was rising, he added.

In Nandyal, 1,200 families were shifted to three relief camps.

Minister for municipal administration N Mohammed Farooq and revenue minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju are being deputed to Kurnool district to oversee relief operations, he added.

He said that due to well-marked low pressure off the Andhra coast, heavy to very heavy rain occurred in the coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore, and Kurnool district in the south.

He explained that the forecast for the next 48 hours indicated moderate to heavy rainfall in coastal districts and Telangana and Rayalaseema in interior Andhra Pradesh.

The chief minister said the district authorities have been put on high alert.

People in low-lying areas will be shifted to safer places if the situation warranted, he pointed out.
