Car bombs, grenade attacks rock Kashmir

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

At least 12 people, including two women, were injured in a series of car-bomb and grenade explosions in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

The militants exploded two car-bombs and an equal number of grenades at two places in Srinagar and one at Pattan in Baramulla district, an official spokesman said.

The explosive-laden vehicles were parked at busy Jehangir Chowk.

Militants first blasted a Maruti car around 1430 hours, to invite the attention of the security forces and police deployed in area. Securitymen dispersed pedestrians and curious onlookers from the scene before an ambassador car packed with explosives blew up, 15 minutes later, he said.

Senior police and security force officials have rushed to the spot, and so far there has been no report of casualties.

The spokesman said at least 12 people were injured when a grenade, targeted at passing army vehicles, missed the target and exploded at Pattan main market in Baramulla district.

Earlier, the spokesman said, militants exploded a grenade near Nowhatta chowk in downtown Srinagar but no one was hurt.

Two car bombs rocked the high security Jehangir Chowk in the city centre on Friday afternoon, the fourth day of the unilateral ceasefire declared by the central government.
