Punjab rail mishap toll rises to 46

The toll in Saturday's accident of the Howrah-Amritsar 3005 Up train has reached 46 with the recovery of six more bodies from beneath the debris which was being cleared from the Ambala-Ludhiana track, officials said in Chandigarh on Sunday.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the spot at Jeonpur village in Fatehgarh Sahib district at 0230 IST and inspected relief operations.

She also visited the Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital where 76 injured passengers are being treated. Minister of State for Railways Digvijay Singh, who had reached the spot late Saturday night, accompanied Banerjee.

Banerjee also visited the Patiala Civil Hospital and talked to some of the injured victims.

LIST OF 25 DEAD IDENTIFIED SO FAR:

Pinto Kumar (Patna), Subodh Kumar (Patna), Tashvir Singh (Pilibhit), Shanti Devi (Ludhiana), Radhe Shyam (Uttar Pradesh), Ram Pal (Rae Bareilly), Naveen Kumar (Patna), Raj Kumar (Amritsar), Savinder Singh (Pilibhit), Sanjay Kumar (Patna) and Teja Singh (60, place unknown).

The victims identified on Saturday were Railway Guard Inder Singh (Saharanpur), Ram Prakash (Ludhiana), Rampravesh Roy, Ram Sulabh, Nina Kusum, Kamal Dhar, Jagannath Prasad, Sunil Kumar, Navin Kumar Sinha, Ram Saran Sinha, B N Kadian, Mohammed Ashaq, Sajjan Singh (Amritsar), and Kulwant Singh.

Special counters have been opened at various stations to provide information. Their numbers are: New Delhi (3344128), Hazrat Nizamuddin (4648674), Jalandhar (956240), Ambala (633653), Ludhiana (744702), Saharanpur (648453), Mughalsarai (55291), Danapur (507428), Patna Junction (324257), Lucknow (216344), Rae Bareilly (212769), Varanasi (342605), Pratapgarh (20489).

The telephone number of the temporary control room at the site of the accident is 01762-63626, while the Sirhind control room numbers are 01763-23855, 01763-23833, 01763-21053.

Meanwhile, a Northern Railway release said train number 4535/4536 [Kalka-Amritsar Express] would remain cancelled until further notice. Some other train services have been curtailed until December 5.

In another incident, rail traffic was disrupted early on Sunday morning following the derailment of eight bogies of the Pune-Jammu Tawi Jhelam Express between Khandwa and Itarsi junctions of the Central Railway. There were no casualties.
