Jawan killed, CRPF camp attacked

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Day 7 of the unilateral cease-fire was marred by a powerful explosion in the northern Baramullah town, which killed two persons, including a jawan of the army, while 28 others, including 20 soldiers, were seriously wounded.

In the afternoon, militants stormed into a heavily guarded camp of the paramilitary Central Reserved Police Force at Ashajipora in the southern Anantnag district. Police said three militants came in a car and forced entry into the battalion headquarters of the CRPF.

The sources said that militants opened heavy fire from automatics on CRPF soldiers guarding the camp, resulting in serious injuries to six members of the paramilitary force.

The jawans later took positions and returned fire.

In the evening, police said a militant was killed.

As messages were flashed, army, BSF and other reinforcements were sent to the area. The camp building was encircled and troops returned fire. Police said a militant was still hiding inside.

It was not known if any jawan was in the camp.

No group has admitted responsibility for the suicide attack.

Police sources in Srinagar said that a powerful bomb planted in an auto-rickshaw exploded near Khanpora on the outskirts of Baramullah town, while an army convoy was on its way to Uri in north Kashmir.

Sources said due to the powerful blast four army vehicles were destroyed. Lance Naik Jai Chand of the 16 Field Regiment died on the spot while 28 others, including 20 jawans, were wounded.

The condition of 13 jawans was stated to be critical.

The jawans were shifted to the army hospital in Baramullah. Of the eight seriously injured civilians, a local engineer of Khanpora, Aqeel Ahmad Shah, succumbed to injuries at the SMHS hospital, where he and others injured were brought after the explosion.

Witnesses said soldiers opened heavy fire from automatics in retaliation. Later, they alleged, security force jawans roughed up passers-by and smashed windowpanes of passing vehicles. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Senior army and police officials went to the spot immediately.

Troops later moved in and mounted a massive search operation.

Last week, two BSF jawans were shot dead by militants in the main market.

Authorities said security has been tightened.

In the other violence, two alleged security force informers were killed and three others were wounded in the Valley.
